Prof. Florian Marquardt
Florian Marquardt is a theoretical physicist whose current focus is on the application of machine learning to scientific discovery and the discovery of physical systems that aid machine learning. He has a long track record in areas bridging nanophysics and quantum optics, including major contributions to the theory of cavity optomechanics and the theory of quantum electrodynamics of superconducting circuits. The current focus of his research group is on the interface between machine learning and physics. He is at present a scientific director at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany, and a professor at the local university. He studied at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and obtained his PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 2002. After postdoctoral research at Yale University, he led a junior research group at the University of Munich before moving to Erlangen.
